Recycling & Circular Economy

Cured silicone cannot be melted and reshaped like a thermoplastic. Orion MoMixx develops chemical recycling to recover silicone-based resources from suitable waste.

Two ways to recycle silicone

Cured silicone has a crosslinked structure. Mechanical recycling changes the particle size. Chemical recycling is the route we develop, because it breaks that structure down.

Cured silicone waste

A crosslinked material. It cannot be melted and remolded by conventional plastic recycling.

Mechanical recycling

Waste is reduced to powder or granules. The crosslinked structure remains. Reuse depends on the particles and the application.

Our focus

Chemical recycling

The polymer network is broken into smaller silicone-based components. Those components can be refined and used in new material development.

What can be assessed

Not every silicone waste stream suits the same process. Composition, additives, and contamination decide whether recovery is feasible.

01

Manufacturing waste

Cured scrap from molding, extrusion, and other production, including rejected parts, offcuts, sheets, tubing, and runners.

02

Uncured or surplus compound

Unused compound and surplus material. Each batch is assessed before any recovery.

03

Used components

Selected silicone parts from industrial or consumer products. Acceptance depends on the material and how contaminated it is.

Chemical recycling process

One sequence, from incoming waste to a resource that can be formulated again.

  1. 01

    Evaluate and prepare

Composition, condition, and contaminants are checked. Suitable material is sorted, and cleaned or reduced in size when that helps processing.

  2. 02

    Break down the polymer

Controlled chemical processing converts suitable silicone into smaller molecular components.

  3. 03

    Recover and refine

Those components are separated from residues and refined for the quality the next use requires.

  4. 04

    Use in new materials

Suitable recovered resources can go into silicone feedstocks and new formulations. The formulation is still chosen for the application.

Back into use

Recycling matters when the recovered resource is used again, not only when waste is collected.

  1. 01

    Silicone waste

Manufacturing waste, surplus compound, or a used component that has passed assessment.

  2. 02

    Recovered feedstock

Smaller silicone-based components that have been separated and refined.

  3. 03

    New silicone materials

Formulations that use those resources where the application allows.

After use, suitable waste can be evaluated again

GRS and ISCC PLUS

Orion MoMixx holds GRS and ISCC PLUS. A recycled-content claim depends on the product and the certification scope. Ask us for the scope that applies to a specific material.
